What is the population of Puerto Rico?

The population of Puerto Rico is about 3 million, which is less than half the population of the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area!
Puerto Rico's population is decreasing, primarily due to a high rate of out-migration, with young people leaving the island to seek better economic opportunities on the U.S. mainland, fueled by factors like a struggling economy and limited job prospects. Natural disasters, such as Hurricane Maria in 2017 have further accelerated the exodus. Plus a declining birth rate has contributed to the overall population decrease.
One result of these changes is that the island now has a very high percentage of elderly people, many of whom need support.

Tomorrow's picture: Are there more Puerto Ricans in New York City than in Puerto Rico?
